What WE are doing


Water Conservation Eforts

  • Antrac Technologies- Antrac is 100% GREEN water treatment for cooling towers & boilers and saves energy. System Installed on 5/1/07-Savings are aprox. 700,000 Gal/Month
  • Lievetum Faucet Water Savers-The normal US faucet’s GPM is between 2.2 and 2.5, however with these water savers we are now able to reduce it to 1.7 GPM without our guests noticing this. (GPM=gallon per minute) 800 water savers were installed on December 2007.
  • Aquarecycling-Reduce Pollutants such as: Chemicals, solids and oil/grease. Conserve limited fresh water resources. Conserve Energy. LEED Certification/Green Building Council. System Installed on December 2006- It saves up to 80% of water in the laundry
  • Chicago Faucets-Toilets are equipped with quiet and reliable tanks that perform a 1.6 GPF. (GPF=Gallon per flush).
  • Speakman flow restrictor device- This device limits the amount of flow in the showerhead to 2.5 GPM. Installed on 2003.
  • Project Planet Program- This program is an effort of the hotel to protect the environment through conservation of water and decreased use of detergent. If you are staying with us more than one night, as part of the Project Planet program, we will launder your linen every three days.
Energy Efficiency Efforts
  • High energy efficient lighting- All lamps installed in the back of house are 100% environmental. Exterior illumination is controlled by lighting timers to save energy.
  • Computerized Energy Management System/Siemens Apogee 600- This system controls a/c consumption in meeting rooms.
Waste Reduction Efforts
  • The hotel provides the opportunity to recycle the following materials: Office Paper and news paper (24 tons/years), cardboard (95 tons/year), oils, batteries, lamps and water (3 Million gallons/year).
Clean Air Practice Efforts
  • The Hotel uses environmentally High efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters.
  • Clean all air handler units and coils annually and follow a preventive maintenance schedule and keep a record of activities
  • Cleaning products are environmental friendly.
Additional Green Information
  • The Intercontinental Hotel Miami has been certified from the Florida Green Lodging with one palm as a green hotel. (2007)
  • Estimated Energy dollar value in savings 2007: $80,000
  • The hotel has purchased a small Energy Star washing machine for the laundry and all new computers. Moving forward, the objective is to purchase Energy Star- rated equipment for the entire building.
  • CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lighting) are installed in every guest room
  • A new and more efficient (0.64 kw/ton) Chiller has been installed. Savings are approx. $ 80,000/year. (Calculations does not include energy consumption of the new SPA)
  • Guest/Meeting room re-lamping project: We have re-lamped 5 different sections offering good savings.
  • In an effort to reach out into the community to promote environmental awareness, Hotel Inter Continental Miami is participating in two community involvement activities. For our first community activity we will host the students from Ferguson Senior High School’s Academy of Hospitality and Tourism to educate them about green tourism. We feel that, in order to ensure that green lodging will become an industry norm rather than a trend, it is important to educate the young students who will be leading the industry in the near future. The second activity is Baynanza. Baynanza is a yearly event dedicated to cleaning up the shores of Biscayne Bay to benefit the community as well as the local wildlife. Last year Baynanza volunteers helped remove more than 33 tons of garbage from the shores of Biscayne Bay. This year a group of Inter Continental Miami’s staff will be participation gin the event which is on April 19th.
